CHUKA DRUMMERS still doing it since 1942

http://tncmashinani.blogspot.com/2015/05/chuka-drummers-still-doing-it-since-1942.html
Since Kenya gained independence 52 years ago, entertainment has taken a great revolution with people shunning traditional dances and songs to embrace modern secular and gospel dance styles.
But Chuka Drummers have remained a darling of many who seek to be entertained by traditional beats.
The drummers have been doing their thing since 1942.
The group founded 73 years ago by the late Ndei Mutaa who hailed from Igaa Village in Meru South, Tharaka-Nithi County has entertained local and international audiences.
It is known as Mwinjiro.
According to the current group leader, Mzee Eustace Njuki, who was among the initial 10 dancers, their sole aim was to entertain the community and spread their culture through generations.
The aging Mzee Njuki recalls how the whole village would gather for entertainment especially during the harvest period and dance till dawn.
“Whenever we began drumming and dancing, the whole village would join in jubilation and people would dance to the rhythm for hours,” Mzee Njuki says.
Mzee Njuki says that during the colonial times, the group was recognised and in 1961 invited to the current Chuka Town to entertain European tourists who visited Mount Kenya through the Chogoria gate. see the premier league top fan supporters
“The whites were overwhelmed with joy and joined us in the dance while others collapsed with laughter,” said the exhausted Mzee Njuki.
In 1962, the group took their first trip outside Kenya to entertain an international leaders’ forum in Tanzania, then known as Tanganyika.
Mzee Njuki says that this was just a start as what followed was an invitation by the first president of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to perform at State House, Nairobi.
FOREIGN TRIPS
The performance at State House served as an opener to foreign and local trips for the group.
In 1969 the group, which then comprised of 15 dancers, flew to Nigeria to entertain leaders as their fame had gone beyond East Africa.
While in Nigeria, Mzee Njuki says, they met many Europeans whom they never knew.
Two years later, one of the people they entertained from Greece invited them to perform in Athens where they stayed for two months.
“What started as local entertainment became international and those foreigners liked how we jumped and bent as we drummed rhythmically,” says Mzee Njuki who has lived to tell history.
The old man says that from Athens followed several invitations and in 1973 they visited Canada for two weeks and in 1975 they were contracted to entertain tourists at Taita Salt Lake Hotel.
He narrated how former President Daniel arap Moi developed a close relationship with the group and invited them whenever he had visitors from outside Kenya.
ENTERTAINED MOI'S GUESTS
In 1981 when Mr Moi was being inaugurated as the Chairman of the Organisation of African Union (OAU) the Chuka Drummers entertained the 42 heads of state present, among them Julius Nyerere of Tanzanian, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.
“We performed so well that Moi joined us in the dance,” says the thrilled old man as he beats his drum rhythmically.
The group normally meets for practice in Itugururu Village in Chuka.
“The costumes and songs depend on the occasion. ‘Macia’ is performed during wedding ceremonies while ‘Mugeni’ is performed to visitors,” said Mr Kenneth Ngai, he group’s secretary.
Their costumes are branded in the colours of the National flag.
Mr Ngai says this is their way of expressing their patriotisms and love for the country.
This also helps them to be easily identified as coming from Kenya whenever they perform outside the country.
“We deeply love our country and everywhere we go, we like to uplift the name of Kenya,” says Mzee Ngai.
Mr Ngai, however, complains that some people from the area and across communities have imitated their dances and songs with others even going to the extent of using their name.
He laments that those groups have ruined their reputation and they are slowly losing popularity.
“These other groups which call themselves Chuka Drummers have stolen our fame and are now going places saying they are the original Chuka Drummers,” says Mr Ngai.
He says that in the neighbouring Embu County, the Mbeere people who border them to the north have a similar dance which they call ‘Ngootha’ but they play songs similar to theirs.
The members also insist that the group at the Bomas of Kenya calling itself ‘Chuka drummers’ is not genuine.
“When you visit Bomas of Kenya you will meet another ‘Chuka Drummers’ performing there purporting to be the original group but they are an imitation,” insists Mr Ngai.
LIVING IN POVERTY
Mr Ngai says that the life they live is not worth the name and fame they have in the whole world. see also15 reasons why lazy people are the smartest

Improved health care major success of devolution

Improved healthcare is one of the major successes of devolution, Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya has said.
Mr Munya said service delivery in a majority of hospitals, especially in Meru County, is now efficient and beneficial to citizens because of devolution.
Speaking at the Meru Technical Training Institute Wednesday when First Lady Margaret Kenyatta took her Beyond Zero campaign and donated the 28th mobile clinic, the governor said counties have made tremendous achievements in the health sector in the last two years.
“For instance in Meru, we have prioritised provision of healthcare and committed the necessary resources.
“About 40 per cent of our annual budget goes to healthcare. It is for you to judge if health has done better under devolution compared proportionately to the last 50 years under the National Government,” Mr Munya said.
The Meru governor said it was important for the both the national and county governments to work together for Kenyans to benefit from devolution.
There have been numerous wrangles between the health workers and the county governments over the management of the crucial function.
But Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said health is a devolved function and would remain so.

"REDESIGN ROADS," governor Samuel Ragwa says.

Tharaka-Nithi County Governor Samuel Ragwa said there is need to redesign the road to avoid the occurrence of accidents.
“There is at least one or two accidents every week at this bridge and everybody will agree that the designing of this road was not the best,” said Mr Ragwa.
He also asked the National Government to re-gazette the bridge as a black spot so that all Kenyans can be alert any time they drive on the road.
John Mutwiri, a truck driver, said that it is difficult to control a speeding long vehicle on the winding road as one approaches the bridge. see also drivers asked to be cautious after the Nithi accident
“The problem is the sharp corner at the bridge which makes it difficult for drivers control a speeding vehicle,” he said.
Only two people out of 14 who were rushed to Chogoria Mission Hospital following the Tuesday accident had been treated and discharged by Wednesday afternoon.
The hospital’s Human Resource and Administrative Manager Maryanne Gitonga, however, said those injured were responding well to treatment.
“Today morning we discharged two out of 14 who were admitted and others are responding well to treatment except for four who are still in critical condition,” said Ms Gitonga.
She said that most of those injured sustained rib and tissue injures due as the bus rolled.
Speaking at the hospital, Maara Sub-County OCPD John Njihia said the injured who had been rushed to Muthambi Dispensary were later transferred to Chogoria Hospital.

Drivers asked to be careful after the NITHI accident

Drivers using the Embu-Meru road have been urged to drive with caution as they approach the Nithi River bridge which is notorious for many fatal accidents.
In the most recent accident, three people died Tuesday evening at the black spot while others were seriously injured.
The accident happened after the driver of the Sunbird bus which was headed to Nairobi from Meru lost control after he noticed a recovery vehicle on the road.
The vehicle was pulling out a truck which had plunged down the Nithi River three days ago.
Following the Tuesday accident, twelve people were Wednesday still undergoing treatment at Chogoria Mission Hospital.
Four of those still in hospital were said to be in critical condition.
Tharaka-Nithi County Commissioner Charles Monari urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are well serviced before using the road as it has many turns and slopes which require a good breaking system.
He took issue with management of some matatu companies for allowing their drivers to speed.
“Some vehicles speed down this dangerous road, something that exposes them to great risk of accidents,” said Mr Monari.
He also urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to take action against companies not adhering to traffic rules.
Mr Monari also asked boda boda riders to be sober while on the busy road and avoid speeding down the dangerous slope.

15 reasons why lazy people are the smartest

If you hated lazy people, after reading this article you are going to make them you next business partners and advisers too.....
1. They find the easiest, most convenient and brilliant ways to do things
2. They have an easy alternative for everything that they’re supposed to do eg. Something that doesn’t demand you to move.
3. Their definition, of being moderately active, may be different from everyone else. Like running to the washroom when your bladder gives up on you.
4. Their business ideas can be worth applauding. "Let’s invent something which wouldn’t want us to work at all, like at all."
5. They will have access to smartest applications, tools, products, technologies, ideas to do things at the last minute and never be late. No wonder !! Go check their phone.
6. When it comes to being creative, you’ll be surprised to see the functionality of things you never thought of.
7. They can handle things to the extreme levels until it is terribly necessary => Holding the pee, waiting for someone to turn on the fan, lying hungry for hours, watching a boring channel etc...So don’t you dare call them impatient.
8. Multi tasking is something they are really good at. Like sleeping and talking on the call.
9. They are likely to remember all the shortcuts by heart because that’s how they live their life, on shortcuts.
10. They are extremely good at reviving with their quick power naps. Painfully smart talent, not everyone can revel in it.
11. They are extremely sharp because they pick new ways to learn things. Ever wonder where all the abbreviations came from?
12. Power naps = Best tonic ever. That’s when their creative buds are most active.
13. Their laziness ends up saving a lot of time and energy for them. A lot of time saved for sleeping and relaxing.
14. And maybe, the lazy lads are the ones behind mushrooming technologies – Dreaming of a worldwith great efficiency and less effort.
15. And this quote from Bill Gates says it all Well, If you want your work to be done faster, give it to a lazy person. He will always find shortcuts.
So be good to all your friends, but be great with your lazy friends. You never know, they might end up being millionaires tomorrow.

BUS leader Kiraitu murungi endorses Ms Mbarire for Embu county governor

Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi has kicked off a political storm by endorsing Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire for the Embu gubernatorial seat.
Kiraitu said Ms Mbarire has what it takes to be governor in the controversy-ridden county. The announcement was seen as a direct assault on Governor Martin Wambora who has had a love-hate relationship with the local leaders. Mr Wambora, who holds the dubious distinction of being the most impeached governor under the Constitution of Kenya 2010, has been at logger heads with some MPs and Members of the County Assembly.Interestingly, Kiraitu and Mbarire are from different political parties which are however affiliated to the ruling Jubilee coalition.
Kiraitu is the founder and leader of Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) while Mbarire belongs to The National Alliance (TNA).The senator, who spoke in the presence of Mbarire and MPs John Muchiri and Muriuki Njagagua, said the former assistant minister was fit to vie for the Embu County chief's post.He said development in Embu County had stagnated due to leadership wrangles and the only way to change was for the Embu people to organise their politics well and have the right leaders in place.
"Embu and Mbeere communities have no option but to co-exist peacefully and give equal opportunities to all. The governor's seat requires someone who can communicate effectively, who can push things around and make noise when required. Mbarire fits the bill," he said.
Wambora said Kiraitu's declaration had no impact in Embu and described it as meaningless and misguided."If he (Kiraitu) wants to endorse his line up, let him do it in Meru where he is a registered voter. His word does not hold sway here," Wambora said.Wambora also accused Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti of bringing senators to Embu "to create a wedge between him and the MCAs just when our working relationship has improved.
Wambora's political advisor Joshua Kanake said Kiraitu's sentiments were aimed at keeping the governor busy responding to criticism so that he does not perform his mandate.
"It is unfortunate that Mr Kivuti would gather senators from areas that have a lot of trouble to export their woes to Embu. It is up to Embu people to judge the performance of their leader," Mr Kanake said.He said if Kiraitu feels Mbarire can perform well as a governor, he should support her to vie for the same position in Meru County where he comes from and not Embu.Kanake also dismissed assertions by Kivuti that he had brought close to Sh8 billion to Embu County that Wambora's administration could not account for saying that was just an accusation meant to derail the governor from his work.Mwariama Council of Elders Chairman Njagi Kumantha also dismissed Kiraitu's endorsement of Mbarireas ill-timed and far-fetched.

ROONEY BELIEVES THAT THEY ARE READY FOR NEXT SEASON

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United are on their way back to being title contenders after just one season under Louis van Gaal.
United achieved their objective of clinching a top-four spot this season and skipper Rooney believes that can be a platform for Van Gaal's squad to mount a sustained challenge for silverware next season.
"Unfortunately no silverware this season, but I think we're looking forward," said Rooney, speaking at United's Player of the Year Awards at Old Trafford.
"We've done what we wanted to do this season. The main aim this season was to get back in the Champions League. We've done that and we know we've got the quality in the squad to push on next season.
"We want to go and win the last game of the season, then next season we really want to push for silverware."
Rooney admitted it was vital for United to make an immediate return to the Champions League after last season's debacle under former boss David Moyes, when they finished seventh.
"It was very important," said Rooney. "If you look at Liverpool and what happened to them, they were without it for years, which was no shame, but I think one year was far too much for this club
"Our main objective this season was to get back into playing Champions League football and kick on next season. We're establishing a very good squad, who I believe can go on and win silverware next year."
Asked to sum up what it has been like working under Van Gaal in his first season as United boss, Rooney said: "Tough. No, the manager has come in and he's been excellent.
"It's a different way of working, a different way to what we were used to, but I think the players have embraced that.
"I think the first few months it was different, we found it tough and I think that probably showed in our performances.

Principle secretaries at a risk of loosing jobs over online procurement

President Uhuru Kenyatta said any Principal Secretary who fails to comply will have his or her status as the chief accounting officer of the ministry taken away immediately. He said he was not going back on the Executive Order he issued that requires all government ministries and agencies to use the e-procurement system to minimise avenues for corruption.

He said there was some compliance but added that it was not satisfactory.

President Kenyatta also said senior officers should know that they cannot fool anyone by making available some tenders on the e-procurement system, while concealing others.“You cannot fool us by showing a tender for Ksh 100 million when your budgets runs into billions,” he said.

President Kenyatta spoke Friday when he opened a new terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with a capacity to handle 2.5 million passengers annually.

A post from a fed up guy about Tharaka nithi county government

http://tncmashinani.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-post-from-fed-up-guy-about-tharaka.html
I spotted this posts from one of the Facebook page that I'm also a member and I found it good to share it with you. This fun must have been disturbed by this issue until he opted to share it with his fellow group members.  He said this,

"In 2014/2015 FY, the following was the budgetally allocation for the four neighbouring Counties; TNC - 3.413B, Kirinyaga - 3.41 B, Embu - 3.47B, Murang'a - 4.831B.
The counties also received level 5 upgrading funds, rural eletrification funds, youth polytechnics development funds! While TNC has nothing to show for these allocations, Murang'a and Kirinyaga were top 15 most developed counties in Kenya in recently conducted survey while Embu despite several impeachments and political rivalries have managed to improve on healthcare, agriculture, rural electrification, education, improved roads network and value addition! Why is it that TNC govt has done nothing with its allocation yet it is the least populated and smallest in size? Is this amount too little for only TNC govt or it is a problem of management within the TNC leadership? Is Gov. Ragwa and his government competent and effective enough to use county allocation to change the lives of TNC residents? What has 5.8 billions in two years done? Where does TNC budgetally allocation go?Why has TNC residents turned a blind eye to this kind of mismanagement and misappropriation of our county allocation? What is so difficult n unique with TNC that is not difficult in other counties? What is the value for TNC money and what is the relevance of the foreign travels by TNC leadership if it does not translate into anything qualitative and quantitative?Have TNC given up on their taxes and given the TNC leadership to do whatever they want with the budgetally allocation? My people of TNC, we are loosing terriblyand the earlier the action the better! 2017 is so near yet so far with these kindof management! Change does not automatically come, its innitiated and bad governance is not fought through fear and cowardise. Its tym TNC pple stood up and demanded value for their money, its not a privilledge but a right.Lets all say 'No' to Ragwa's bad governance and send him home!"
