Chuka University Students Goes On Strike After Election Results Disagreements

On Monday 8th of February 2016, normal programs of Chuka university and it's environments were destructed after a group of unknown students started rioting. They said that the elections which took place about a week ago were rigged.

Harrison maina defeated Kenneth Waringa on elections which were held a week ago. However Kenneth was not satisfied with the results. This is not the first demonstration to be held by the students but it's the most destructive to ever been conducted in the university.

The group was joined by other students who took their way to Ndagani market. Kiosks and shops were destroyed forcing all the shops to be closed to avoid more destruction. Many residents from Ndagani area were injured as they run for their lives. Chuka-Meru road was also closed after they started burning tyres on the road. This forced the police to be deployed at the area to control the students and avoid further destruction of property.

University property was also not left behind. The teaching institutions were stoned destroying the windows and doors. One of the school buses was also burnt down. Some vehicles also belonging to the university were stoned. We were not able to take pictures due to the rejection of the students to those who took pictures. Infact as we speak some journalists who took pictures are nursing injuries at the hospital after the students attacked them.

The school security officers were unable to control the students after they started throwing stones towards then. Due to unbearable pressure from the students, the officers were forced to run in order to save their lives.

After sometimes, Mr Erastus Njoka who is the vice chancellor of the institution, issued a notice to all the students that the school has been closed till further notice. However he did not talk about the issue.

More than 12 students were arrested as the main suspect who started the strike and investigations to find out more about the strike has already been started by the police men. Residents complained of destruction of their property and asked the vice chancellor to look for a way to compensate them.
